Mi corazón estaba desbocado, la tenía frente a mí, después de tantos años de soñar con ella, la tenía más cerca que nunca, pero a la vez inalcanzable; con el ir y venir de los autos resultaba imposible cruzar la calle; observé mi reloj, sobre él cayó una gota de agua, luego, el cielo se abrió, solo atiné en cerrar mi gabardina, el paraguas lo había olvidado en el departamento. Un río de turistas se aventuró a cruzar la calle, los seguí, fui zigzagueando para esquivar a los dos, a la gente y a los autos.
Mi rostro se congeló por el frío que había llegado a París de manera intempestiva, pero yo se lo adjudiqué a una razón más romántica, a lo que mis ojos contemplaban. Estaba ahí, sigilosa, discreta, casi podría decir que, buscando pasar desapercibida, pero alguien como ella, jamás lo haría. Y es que ella tiene, ¿personalidad? ¿Se podrá decir así?
Mi cita era en 37 Rue de la Bûcherie, a unos pasos del Sena y a un costado de Notre Dame. La lluvia dejó de caer, me recargué sobre el árbol que está frente a ella; me crucé desafiantemente de brazos y entonces, el tiempo se estacionó. Sonreí y avancé con determinación.
Shakespeare and company era el nombre de mi cita. La emblemática librería del barrio latino me esperaba, después de algunos años me volvía a reencontrar con ella. El lugar es uno que reclama lugar en la historia de la capital francesa, a pesar de sus pocos años de existencia, ¡solamente cien! Es una chicuela con relación a una ciudad que inició a escribir su historia 2300 años atrás con los Parisii.
Jalé la puerta y entré al mundo perfecto, al paraíso. Borges solía decir que si el paraíso tuviera forma sería la de una librería. El diminuto espacio es justo el necesario para hacer sentir a sus visitantes el síndrome de Stendhal, y es que cada obra que habita en S&C es valiosa por sí misma.
Estar en un lugar así, es equiparable a beber un excelente vino, se disfruta con todos los sentidos.
La vista se fue posando en cada rincón del lugar, me resultó inevitable pensar, mientras lo hacía, que estaba parado en el mismo lugar que Fitzgerald, Hemingway y muchos personajes claves de nuestro mundo lo habían hecho tiempo atrás.
¿Quién hizo posible este paraíso? Fue Sylvia Beach quien en 1919 abrió las puertas por primera vez. Gracias, Sylvia por haber creado a mi chica ideal.
¿Quién hizo posible este paraíso? Fue Sylvia Beach, quien en 1919 abrió las puertas por primera vez a unas cuantas cuadras de distancia, en la rue de l´odeon. Ahí fue haciéndose de un nombre para su librería, por la calidad de las obras que se podían encontrar, pero también por algo fascinante, era el lugar de reunión de los libros incómodos, esos a los que los editores le daban la espalda.
Fue entonces que ahí, en ese diminuto espacio, vio por primera vez la luz, Ulyses de James Joyce. El libro había sido presa de la censura y se le había negado su publicación, fue así hasta llegar con su protectora, Sylvia, la indicada para publicar el libro que se convertiría en referente de la literatura.
La ascendente carrera de la librería sería interrumpida abruptamente en 1941. Sylvia negó un ejemplar a un oficial alemán, uno irónicamente del propio Joyce. Días después regresaron, vaciaron y clausuraron el lugar. No fue hasta 1948, aun con la resaca de la Segunda Guerra mundial, que George Whitman, un estadounidense que se había quedado a radicar en la capital francesa, reabre la librería, en la dirección que está actualmente.
Darle continuidad a éste pilar de la literatura no fue fácil, el ex soldado intentó una y otra vez convencer a Sylvia para asociarse y abrir juntos, ella no aceptó, pero después de su asedio le entregó el nombre para que siguiera con su sueño.
Shakespeare & Co sigue de pie, en el mismo lugar que se reabrió, tiene una hermana menor al lado, pero mi preferida es la antigua, la misma con quien tenía mi cita.
